Custom Fit Athletic Mouth Guards
If you or your child play sports, then you understand that safety is critical. A mouth guard is a piece of athletic equipment that’s as important as helmets and knee pads. When it comes to sports that involve a lot of contact and collisions with other players, your teeth deserve the same level of protection as the rest of your body. When a tooth is knocked out, you or your child runs the risk of infection, damage to adjacent teeth, or permanent damage to the mouth. Contact damage can also cause concussions and injury to the TMJ or temporomandibular joint. Issues resulting from TMJ include a headache and jaw pain.
You’ve probably seen generic athletic mouth guards in drugstores or sporting goods stores. This one size fits all device should be avoided. An improperly fitted or non-custom mouth guard may cause even greater damage to teeth in the case of a collision. Having a custom fit mouth guard ensures the highest level of protection for your teeth, and also reduces the chance of concussion. Custom mouth guards are also built to last for several years, as opposed to the lower-quality design of store-bought. Mouth guards that you grab off the shelf can also be bulky, uncomfortable, and make breathing difficult while worn.
What to Expect
When athletic mouth guards at our Oak Brook IL office are created, Dr. Chris takes an impression of your teeth from which the mouth guard is molded. After the molding is complete, you’ll return to the office to try on your mouth guard and make sure the fit is perfect. You’ll be instructed on how to take proper care of your mouth guard to keep it free from bacteria and in good shape for a long time.
If you’re in need of athletic mouth guards, call our Oak Brook IL office to schedule an appointment with Dr. Chris. Don’t return to the field for another game without one!
