What is a Night Guard?
Are you grinding or clenching your teeth at night, or waking up with a sore jaw? If so, you might need a night guard. Dental night guards are custom made in our Oak Brook IL office to ensure a perfect fit for your teeth. This device also called an occlusal guard, serves as a layer of protection between your top teeth and bottom teeth, thus effectively combating the effects of grinding and clenching.
How Does it Benefit Your Teeth?
When you grind your teeth, you wear down the outer layer of enamel, which can cause your teeth to chip or put you at greater risk for cavities. After all, enamel can’t be replaced! If you’re hesitant to get a night guard, consider it a valuable investment in prevention. Keeping your teeth in good shape and free from the damages of grinding will prevent you from needing more expensive–and potentially painful– restorative dental procedures in the future.
A night guard can also help alleviate the symptoms of a temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ. With a properly fitted night guard, you’ll wake up without painful headaches or jaw tension.
Will it Hurt?
Night guards are not painful. When you first get your night guard, it will take some getting used to and might feel a bit uncomfortable at first. But since it’s been molded to fit your teeth perfectly, the discomfort will soon fade. To get used to it, you might want to wear your night guard for a few hours, before going to bed. Avoid eating and drinking while wearing your night guard.
